White sand curving around shallow turquoise water at Eton Beach

Eton Beach

White sand, a river mouth and a reef

Most of Efate’s coast is raised coral, so a proper white-sand beach is a treat. Eton is the best of them within easy reach of Port Vila: a curve of fine sand with a shallow, reef-protected lagoon in front and a small stream flowing into one end.

The beach belongs to Eton village, which keeps it clean and charges a small entry fee. On weekdays it can be nearly empty; at weekends local families arrive with picnics.

Top things to do: Eton Beach

Swim in the lagoon

The water inside the reef is shallow, warm and usually calm — ideal for children. Stay inside the reef line; currents are stronger near the passages.

Follow the stream

A freshwater stream runs across the sand into the sea, cool on a hot day and a favourite paddling spot for small children.

Snorkel nearby

There are rock pools and patches of coral at the edges of the bay. Farther north along the coast, the snorkelling spot known as Top Rock is a popular lunch stop on round-island tours.

  • By tour: east-coast swimming tours usually include both stops.

Insider tips

  • Entry is around 500 vatu per person, paid in cash to the village caretaker (check on the day).
  • There are shelters, picnic tables and basic toilets. Bring your own food, water and shade.
  • Dress modestly when you leave the sand — this is a village, not a resort.
  • Sundays are quiet in Vanuatu; some village sites close or open late.
